What I want my children to know:
How popular you are or aren't in high school will have no baring on the rest of your life!
Yes, learning social skills and having a good group of friends will teach you a lot about who you are and how to treat people and how you expect to be treated, but those are the lessons you need to learn, not who will be at the cool kids party this weekend.
Once you pass high school and really college all of that falls to the side. When you start a new job no one knows or cares who you hung out with after prom. they do care if you are a kind person who works hard and does what they say they will do. When you start dating(serious dating) your lover will not scour your yearbook to see if you are pictured with the football star or prom queen. They will want to know that you are loyal and loving.
So please, don't compromise yourself or your values to hang out with a certain crowd. Don't try to force a friendship with people who don't truly value who you are. Be friends with people who love you and love the same things you love. People who treat you with respect and kindness, and people who will laugh their ass off at you when you fall, but still help pick you up.
Love Mom.
Thank you for sharing! So, what do YOU want your kids (or future kids) to know? Want to share? Email me your "Things I want my kids to learn" to heatherluann@gmail.com with a link to your blog and I will feature you on here. Want to be anonymous? That works too.
